VTV Go

Reliable at national scale, ready for every milestone

VTV Go

VTV Go is the official online television platform of Vietnam Television (VTV), serving millions of views per day across more than 40 channels covering a full range of content from news and politics to sports and entertainment. The platform not only serves domestic viewers but also acts as an official information channel for the Vietnamese diaspora in Laos, China, Thailand, and beyond, where users can watch live or catch up on any device, from anywhere.

When millions show up at once

Unlike conventional streaming platforms, VTV Go's traffic does not grow steadily day by day. It spikes sharply around events. A football final, a live National Assembly session, or a national anniversary can push traffic up several times over in just a few minutes. Very few content platforms at this scale face the same dynamic.

The 2018 World Cup season made this undeniable. More than 11,300,000 users accessed the platform simultaneously to watch livestreams and track match results, making it one of the largest streaming events ever recorded on domestic infrastructure. That figure did not just reflect the appeal of the content. It raised a serious question: was the existing infrastructure truly capable of handling the load as moments like this kept coming, each bigger than the last?

Growing pains - Where the old setup was falling short

The pressure came not only from viewer numbers but also from audience expectations. A few seconds of frozen video or lost audio in the middle of a tense match was enough for viewers to switch channels and never come back. Each such moment was not merely a lost view. It was a loss of trust in the broadcasting brand.

Beyond performance, the legacy provider's infrastructure also put VTV in a passive position on costs. The fixed-payment model made no distinction between peak event seasons and quiet periods, while actual traffic varied enormously. The system was sometimes over-provisioned and sometimes under-capacity, and VTV bore the consequences either way. When the technical team needed urgent support, the only option was to submit a ticket and wait. For a live broadcast, that waiting time is time that cannot be recovered.

A third risk was copyright. As the holder of significant exclusive content, VTV faced the ongoing threat of livestream recordings being captured and spread across social media. Without a protection mechanism, every major event could become a free content source for third parties to exploit, while VTV absorbed the full cost of production.

One ecosystem to solve all 3

Three problems coexisted: delivery performance, operating costs, and copyright protection. Solving each in isolation was not enough. VTV Go needed a partner that could address all three within a unified ecosystem. VNETWORK was the choice that met every requirement:

  • CDN with 2,300+ global PoPs and 4,000+ servers in Vietnam: Video and livestream content is delivered from the node closest to each viewer, significantly cutting latency for audiences in Laos, China, Thailand, and other regions. The CDN also integrates network-layer DDoS protection, keeping infrastructure stable during sudden traffic surges.
  • HLS (HTTP Live Streaming): An ultra-low-latency livestream solution with under 3 seconds of delay, using the RTMP protocol to ensure synchronized, buffer-free audio and video. Built for real-time content such as football matches, national ceremonies, and major political broadcasts.
  • SwiftTranscode (VoD and Live Transcoding): Video is automatically transcoded into multiple resolutions (480p, 720p, 1080p) using adaptive bitrate, supporting both uploaded content and active live streams. Viewers on any device and any connection enjoy smooth playback without waiting for post-broadcast processing.
  • DRM (Digital Rights Management): All exclusive VTV content is protected against unauthorized copying and redistribution. Viewers cannot download videos or share links to DRM-secured content, giving VTV direct control over how its content is consumed and distributed.

Together, these four solutions form a closed loop: content is encrypted, delivered fast to every end user, and protected at every step. VTV Go no longer needed to coordinate multiple separate providers. Every aspect of operations runs in sync on a single platform.

47% Performance lift, incidents resolved in under 5 minutes

Immediately after deployment, VTV Go recorded clear improvements across its entire infrastructure. Livestream performance increased by 47%, and buffering during peak hours and in international regions nearly disappeared. Viewers in Laos, China, and Thailand experienced stable, high-quality streams for the first time on par with domestic audiences.

Instead of paying a fixed fee for over-provisioned reserve capacity, VTV switched to a pay-per-actual-usage model. Operating costs were visibly reduced, and VTV was no longer caught off guard when traffic spiked during event seasons.

The most significant operational change was incident response speed. VNETWORK's technical team now provides direct 24/7 support on a per-broadcast-campaign basis, replacing the slow ticket queue of the previous setup. Average incident resolution time dropped to under 5 minutes. In live broadcasting, where every second of downtime is gone for good, that number matters.

The hardest test - Live broadcasting the September 2nd National Day

Broadcasting the National Day parade live is the most unforgiving test any video delivery system can face. There is no room for error. Millions of viewers tune in simultaneously from across the country, and even a few seconds of lag or signal loss will be felt immediately. This is not a sporting event with a replay. It is not an entertainment program viewers can catch up on later. Every second happens only once.

Throughout the broadcast, VNETWORK managed the entire video delivery infrastructure for the event. A high-quality stream ran continuously to every device from smartphones and laptops to smart TVs with zero interruptions. Millions of people across Vietnam watched the ceremony exactly as it unfolded, complete from beginning to end.
